This narrow bridge was the scene of some of the bloodiest fighting of the Battle of Antietam. Union infantry under command of General Ambrose Burnside were tasked with crossing Antietam Creek at this point, in an effort to turn the right flank of General Robert E. Lee's Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. Burnside's men made several charges across this bridge, under constant fire from hundreds of Georgians, who were posted all along the ridgeline in the background.
