Custom Fine Art Print on Premium Media - Batteries Thomas and Schenck at Fort Morgan. The first of two rapid fire gun batteries to be built just outside Fort Morgan, Thomas began service just as the Spanish-American War broke out. Thomas mounted two 4.7” Rapid Fire guns, each of them capable of firing a 45 pound projectile six miles, Thomas proved to be extremely vulnerable to enemy fire. Eventually, one of Thomas’ gun emplacements was converted into a Range Finding Station for the adjacent Battery Schenck. At first, Schenck mounted two Model 1898 15-pounder Rapid Fire guns.
