This is the interior of the large powder magazine in Fort Pickens' Bastion A. Visible are the heavy doors through which barrels of black power could be passed. Note the thick white concretions of oyster-shell mortar which have coated the magazine’s walls as rain-water seeped through Pickens’ bricks. The fort’s engineers addressed this problem by installing wooden inner walls in these magazines.
