The Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers come together at Harper's Ferry, Virginia. Visible near the right end of the panorama are the old stone buttresses that once supported a bridge across the mouth of the Shenandoah, and near the opposite end of the image are similar tree-covered buttresses, paralleling the modern railroad bridge. These once supported a large wooden covered bridge across the Potomac.
